The goal of the breeding program at Tallgrass Kennels is to consistently produce outstanding Labrador Retriever started dogs and puppies.  We feel we can meet our breeding objective by very selectively breeding previously proven lines of Labrador Retrievers out of the United Kingdom.

We are privileged to be able to leverage decades of selective breeding efforts.  These efforts have resulted in Labradors who are born with the following desirable fundamental qualities. In our opinion, these are listed in order of relative importance:

Intelligence:  Basic intelligence plays a major role in determining what your dog's hunting capabilities will be.

Biddability:   A good attitude about accepting training and being worked with is an inheritable trait. Your dog needs to possess the desire to please.....if it does not, then he or she won't be as trainable.

 

Temperament:  This psychological element is very important.  We desire a soft-natured, amiable dog.  A well-balanced, mellow dog who does not display any aggressive behavior is our goal.  A mellow temperament is especially important if there are small children in the home.

Desire to retrieve and find game:  We select for a dog who has a very strong desire to retrieve and is equally driven to find game.

Functional Conformation:  The physical form your dog possesses will dictate how efficiently he or she will move, which directly impacts the level of endurance your dog will be capable of.

We select studs based on all the above qualities to breed to our female line.
